Roundabout work for new homes set to begin

THE JUNCTION IS THE FINAL PIECE OF THE PUZZLE AT SITE

A LARGE roundabout set to be the final piece of the puzzle for a new housing development on a former opencast mine site is now taking shape.

Workers are busy creating the island in Park Road, Newhall, near Garden King and Build Base.

The road was recently controversially closed for several weeks while the foundation work was completed. It is believed the roundabout will be completed in the next four-to-six weeks.

Work has not yet started on the 68 houses nearest the roundabout, known as ‘Site A.’ When they are completed, there will be a total of 600 homes on the former Cadley Hill colliery site.

Site B has already seen 132 homes built on seven acres of land off Woodland Road, Stanton, near the junction with Newhall. A further 302 are almost completed on 32 acres of land off William Nadin Way, Swadlincote, where there is now another new roundabout.

All the developments, collectively known as Cadley Park, surround the new country park and golf course which make up the majority of the opencast mining site. Land to the north of William Nadin Way represents former mineral workings.

The closure of Cadley Hill colliery on March 25, 1988, marked the end of deep coal mining in South Derbyshire. The site became open cast, with surface coal extraction finally ceasing in 1997.

The opencast site provided a new road – William Nadin Way – that gives a direct link from the town centre to the A444.

During previous public consultations, concerns were raised over existing infrastructure, including capacity at nearby schools. There were claims the roads would not be able to cope with a projected increase in traffic.

But Harworth Estates bosses said in a statement submitted with its planning application: “The impact of the development on the wider road network will be assessed using a traffic model agreed with the Highways Agency.”

They said the scheme would be designed to cater for the traffic generated by the new development.

As a result of the scheme being approved, the developer agreed to give financial contributions of £20,740 to Green Bank Leisure Centre; £41,820 for public open space; £37,400 towards a new park at William Nadin Way; and £226,626.96 for classrooms at Stanton Primary School.
