A blast back to the past with some of Burton’s loved and lost night spots

-

SOME readers may look at the plans for a large live entertainment venue and think we have gone back to the past.

Over the years Burton has enjoyed a wide range of live music venues and of course still has The Brewhouse Arts Centre which caters for such entertainment.

Maybe you remember Abracadabra’s in New Street – the club which famously baffled residents into thinking the Northern Lights were making an appearance when it was owner Bob Cadd and his ‘sky tracker’ lighting device illuminating the sky for its grand opening in August 2000.

Or maybe your era is more akin to the old Central Club in Derby Street.

Not forgetting Bargates of course with the venue undergoing many name changes over the years including Adam’s and Eve’s.

If you worked for one of the large employers at the time your firm also had its own social club which could rival some of the best nightspots in the area.

Ind Coope’s Sports and Social Club attracted more than its fair share of big name entertainment but so did the social clubs of Bass, Pirelli, SBK and Robirch to name just a few.

Finally, no list would be complete without a mention of the 76 Club in High Street – the club which has seen the likes of Joe Brown, Lulu and the Sex Pistols perform in the town.
