HOUSING could be built on a cemetery next to a busy route linking Burton and Swadlincote.

The land measures around 0.33 acres and has been put on the market seven years after plans to turn it into a graveyard were approved.

The Resting Forever Cemetery, off Woodland Road, Stanton, is a private graveyard which, according to its website, was established to “meet the growing needs of the local community who wish to be buried in a freehold grave set in natural virgin grounds”.

Planning permission was granted in 2015 but, according to the firm’s website, the graveyard was not opened until August 2019. It says it caters for Catholic, Jewish, Muslim and natural burials as well as cremated remains.

Calls and emails to Resting Forever for more details have gone unanswered and there was no-one at the site when the Burton Mail visited. But now the land is being sold – and marketed by London-based marketing agency Regal Residence.

In its marketing report, the firm said: “The site has planning approved for a graveyard, but a change of planning can be applied for through the usual channels. This is a rare opportunity and ideal for a developer.”

The site is being sold freehold and a price will be revealed upon application. A spokesman for Regal Residence told the Burton Mail it is understood that there are no graves on the site.

When the application for a graveyard was submitted, the exact number of burial plots was not known, but it promised to create one part-time job and have a car park with room for six cars.

The report also stated: “This piece of land (off Woodland Road) was created to prevent the coalescence of Newhall and the suburbs of Burton as a result of newly built development. The existence of a cemetery in this location will contribute to that objective and provide a long-term use for the land which will prevent the erosion of the Green belt.”
