Major employer taking on 100 skilled staff
A MAJOR regional employer has announced it will soon be taking on 100 new skilled staff as part of a £2.3 billion deal to design and make monorail cars.
The contract to supply the Egyptian transport ministry with 280 cars, which was signed in 2019 by a consortium led by Alstom, is the first time a UK firm has agreed to export products of this kind since 2008, a spokesperson for the manufacturer said.
The Cairo ministry of transport will receive the parts manufactured in Derby, with each of 70 trains due to operate in the African capital city each comprising four cars.
A spokesperson for Alstom said: “Alstom will design, supply, install and commission 70 four-car monorails (280 cars), signalling and automatic train control, power supply, communication systems, automatic fare collection and other equipment, as well as providing project management, and system integration.”
