-

A MAN has been jailed after he was caught stealing hundreds of pounds worth of T-shirts and hooded jackets from a Burton store.

Sean Slater, of James Street, Burton, smashed his way through a window at TK Maxx in The Octagon shopping centre to steal £500 worth of clothing, leaving a trail of devastation.

A photo was later published of the scene outside the store showing the smashed window along with a yellow warning barrier. The incident happened between 10.50pm on Thursday, September 1, and 7am on Friday, September 2, and was just months after Slater stole from two other shops, a court heard.

Cannock Magistrates’ Court heard how he stole a smart TV from a store off Union Street, in Burton, worth £199, on Friday, May 20. Slater also stole chocolates to the value of £50 on Saturday, July 9 from a store in Horninglow Road North in the town.

He has now been sentenced to eight months behind bars following the court hearing on Tuesday, October 25, having pleaded guilty to theft from a shop and two counts of burglary.

PC Simon Jevons, of Staffordshire Police, said after the case: “Each offence had a profound impact on the businesses targeted. We’re pleased with the sentence handed to Slater by the court and hope it acts as a deterrent for anyone wishing to commit similar crimes in our county.”
