Rams rattle Reds
LIVERPOOL THROUGH IN PENALTY SHOOT-OUT
DERBY County bowed of the Carabao Cup on penalties after pushing Liverpool all the way in their thirdround tie at Anfield.
After the game finished goalless, it went to spot-kicks to decide the winner and Harvey Elliott fired Jurgen Klopp’s side into the next round.
David Mcgoldrick and Louie Sibley scored their penalties for the Rams but Conor Hourihane, Craig Forsyth and Lewis Dobbin were denied by Reds keeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
Rams keeper Joe Wildsmith denied Stefan Bajcetic, while Roberto Firmino fired over the bar, but Alex Oxlade-chamberlain, Darwin Nunez and, finally, Elliott scored as the Reds won the shoot-out 3-2.
The Rams restricted Liverpool to little in the way of clear-cut chances in the first half.
Oxlade-chamberlain threatened when he lashed a volley wide of the upright after a corner had been halfcleared to him.
Eiran Cashin then nearly paid for a mistake when a heavy touch allowed Layton Stewart to find Fabio Carvalho on the edge of the box.
The midfielder returned the pass but Stewart could only fire over the bar in front of more than 5,600 travelling Rams supporters.
In the second half, the Rams created their best chance of the game when a clever throw-in routine ended with Sibley crossing for Max Bird.
The midfielder got the benefit of a deflection off Nat Phillips but dragged his shot agonisingly wide.
Oxlade-chamberlain then fired in a shot that took a deflection only for Wildsmith to make a super save.
The keeper then denied the Liverpool midfielder again moments later as Klopp turned to the bench to send on Nunez, Firmino and Elliott.
Rams head coach Paul Warne sent on Mcgoldrick and Dobbin and the pair combined for the latter to race away but he failed to trouble Reds keeper Kelleher.
Wildsmith then had to make a super save to deny Elliott before Mcgoldrick headed straight at the goalkeeper.
Liverpool tried to push for a winner in normal time but the Rams defended superbly, taking it to penalties.
