Parades and services to remember those who gave their lives in conflict
REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY EVENTS IN THE AREA
TOMORROW the UK will once again come together to pay their respects to those who died while fighting for their country.
Poppies will be worn with pride and wreaths laid in tribute to the fallen armed services heroes as people remember the sacrifices that they made.
Those from towns, cities and villages across the country will be attending Remembrance Sunday services and parades to honour our brave service men and women. And East Staffordshire and South Derbyshire are no exception.
See below details of the Remembrance Sunday services and parades.
BURTON
The Remembrance parade through Burton will start forming at Burton Library car park from 9.30am and depart at 9.50am.
The parade, led by mascot Corporal Watchman VI and his dog handler, will proceed down High Street and into Market Place, arriving at St Modwen’s Parish Church for a Service of Remembrance at 10am.
Residents who wish to attend the Service of Remembrance, but do not wish to join the parade, are asked to be seated in St Modwen’s Parish Church by 9.50am.
An Act of Remembrance will then take place at the war memorial in Lichfield Street at 10.55am, including a wreath-laying ceremony. The parade will reform and return down High Street back to the Burton Library car park, with eyes left for the salute outside Barclays Bank.
East Staffordshire mayor Philip Hudson said: “We must never forget the sacrifice made by so many brave armed forces members, and I hope residents of East Staffordshire will join us in paying our respects to those who risk their lives serving our country.”
SWADLINCOTE
The Remembrance Sunday parade will start in Swadlincote High Street and culminate in an outdoor service and wreath laying at the Memorial Gates at
Eureka Park. This will be the first parade residents can take part in for two years due to Covid restrictions.
There will also be two indoor evening services on Remembrance Sunday – one at the Salvation Army Citadel, in Wilmot Road, Church Gresley, at 5pm, and the other at Emmanuel Church, in Church Street, Swadlincote, at 6.30pm.
Chairman of South Derbyshire District Council, Paul Dunn, said: “It’s good news that the parade on Remembrance Sunday will be able to return this year after its enforced absence.
“We know how much South Derbyshire residents value the opportunities to pay their respects to those who made
the ultimate sacrifice on Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday. Taking part in the parade through the streets of Swadlincote has been a missing poignant piece over the last few years, and its return will be welcome by many.”
UTTOXETER
The service in Uttoxeter will be led by the Uttoxeter Town Band. It will start at 10am at Market Place on Sunday.
NATIONAL MEMORIAL ABORETUM, ALREWAS
The National Memorial Arboretum will be hosting its annual Remembrance Sunday Service of Remembrance at the base of the iconic Armed Forces Memorial.
Thousands of people are expected to attend the service, and arrival is recommended by 10am.
Due to a large number of anticipated attendees, it is recommended to book visits in advance to guarantee entry, a spokesman has said.
ELSEWHERE IN STAFFORDSHIRE
The Lichfield parade will leave the Guildhall at 9.40am on Sunday, before making its way towards the cathedral service at 10am. There will then be a service at the city’s Garden of Remembrance at 11am.
