Pupils helping school’s environment aims with good as new toy sale

-

FAMILIES are getting the chance to turn unwanted toys into cash as Burton school children lead the way in helping their school go green.

Outwoods Primary School, in Harehedge Lane, Stretton, has enlisted the support of Recycling Rangers, 50 pupils aged seven to 11 years old, to come up with initiatives which will help improve the school’s impact on the environment.

On Saturday, November 19, the school will be holding a Good As New Toy Sale and is appealing for families to take part. Part of an ongoing drive to go green for pupils they are also starting a paper recycling scheme and reducing single use plastics in a bid to gain Plastic Free School status.

The project follows a Recycling Workshop at the school where children learnt how to recycle correctly as well as the impact of plastic on the environment and the world’s oceans.

Maria Ashworth, who is leading the project, said the realisation of the damage plastic was doing to the environment made the children keen to do more to support their environment.

She said: “The UK produces 2.5 million tonnes of plastic packaging annually and waste in schools is a huge part of the problem.

The children’s passion to create their own Plastic Free School is inspiring and here at Outwoods we are passionate about supporting the future generation of environmental campaigners who will help to make the changes needed for our planet.

“There are lots of ways that we can make a difference and it has been exciting working with the children to look at how they can help make a positive impact on the environment.

“Little changes all add up to a big difference. Our nearly new sale is a great way for families to not only clear out unwanted toys and books and make a bit extra cash but also means these toys can be reused and found a new home.”

Forty per cent of sales from the event will go towards the school to support future projects with the remaining 60% going directly to the sellers.

Sellers are not required to stay for the sale and will just need to collect unsold items at the end of the day, receiving a cheque shortly after for the items sold.

Saturday’s sale runs from 1.30pm to 3pm, with books, toys, bikes and dressing up outfits all available in a nearly new condition.

There will be a £1 entrance fee for adults on the day.
