Steelmen have too much for Moatmen

- GRESLEY ROVERS

A DOMINANT second-half performance by visitors Corby Town proved too much for Gresley Rovers as they went down 3-0 in the NPL Midlands Division.

The first half was end-to-end but both sides were limited to a few half-chances.

The first chance came from a Jordan Gough header inside the box but it went wide.

Gresley threatened again with a swift counter-attack led by James Spruce but Corby were able to snuff out the danger.

The Steelmen had, however, begun to look dangerous and they took a 27th-minute lead.

A long ball was floated into the Gresley area by Kalern Thomas, the Moatmen could not clear their lines and Hilton Arthur took advantage to score with a tidy finish.

The Moatmen had a few corners in succession as they tried to hit back nut nothing came of them.

Just before half-time, Levi Reid struck a speculative effort from around 25 yards that went wide.

And Spruce went close again just before the break when he turned a defender but his shot brushed the outside of the post.

As both sides threatened at the start of the second half, a darting run from Corby’s Rio Molyneaux caused alarm but Mason Frizelle was able to clear.

Lewis Fenney saved from Daniel Collins after that but Corby got on top and doubled their lead in the 67th minute when Molyneaux did well to hold off defenders and shoot into the top right corner.

The points were safe for the visitors after 74 minutes when Tristan Matthews cut in from the right and scored with a good finish.
