A SWADLINCOTE store that has been serving the people of the town for two decades is set to close its doors for good.

Penmark Cards, in High Street, is to close on Christmas Eve.

The card and gift shop, which sold Thorntons chocolates, now has a “ten per cent off everything” closing down sale as it enters its final few weeks of trading.

Owner Mark Rees confirmed the closure of the store, saying that he took the difficult decision to shut up shop with a “heavy heart” after over 20 years of trading.

Mr Rees runs a number of franchise stores carrying the Thorntons fascia across the country, including a branch at Allestree’s Park Farm Centre in Derby.

This store will remain unaffected and will continue to trade as normal.

He also has a separate partnership agreement with cards and gifts retailer Hallmark.

Mr Rees said: “It is with a heavy heart that we have taken the difficult decision to close our store in Swadlincote.

“The shop has served the community for over 20 years and we’ve had some incredible staff along the way and extremely loyal customers who we value dearly.”

The shop, which spans 2,020 sq ft, will not remain empty for long though as a beauty business is set to take it up in the new year.

Mr Rees added: “We wish the community of Swadlincote well in the future and our understanding is that a beauty business will be coming in to occupy the space, so thankfully the unit will not remain empty.”
