A TV antiques expert is one of the famous faces who will be turning on the Christmas lights display in Burton town centre.

Television auctioneer Richard Winterton will be among the big names at the event that attracts thousands.

This year’s switch-on, which takes place on Sunday, November 27, has been expanded to include new festive lighting in New Street and Union Street. The switch-on event will start from 2pm with family entertainment, competitions and live music on the main stage, hosted by Mark O’sullivan.

Crowds will also be treated to a range of guests including Burton Olympic bronze medallist boxer Frazer Clarke and Brit nominee DJ Nathan Dawe, who is also from the town.

Wintertons has just opened up a unit in Burton Market Hall and offers free weekly valuations of jewellery and watches. People are invited to drop in at the unit between 10am and 1pm on Mondays with jewellery and watches to find out if they could be worth something.

Mr Winterton said: “It’s a real honour to be asked to help switch on the Christmas lights.

We’ve had a wonderful warm welcome to Burton Market Hall and this is the icing on the cake.

“Our new unit has been very busy with people popping in to ask for advice and valuation estimates for jewellery and watches and we also had a fantastic event for vintage toys recently. We’re looking forward to more weekly valuations leading up to Christmas with further special events in the New Year. Everyone at Richard Winterton Auctioneers would like to wish the people and businesses of Burton every good wish for the festive season.”

This year’s switch-on event is being sponsored by Coopers

Square Shopping Centre and Bloor Homes. The event will be taking place in Burton town centre and will include a funfair and festive market stalls and is a big one on the calendar for families.

Coopers Square manager Lynette Howgate said: “Coopers Square is a community-oriented shopping centre with the town of Burton at its heart. We are delighted to support with the East Staffordshire Borough Council’s festive celebrations and play our part in the town to kick off the Christmas period with some cheer.

“Burton is already seen in the wider area as a shopping hub for many nearby towns and villages. We have a great selection in the centre to get ready for Christmas in a brilliant town centre environment. Events like this encourage more people to shop in Burton and boost the local economy, which can only be a great thing for the town.”

Cabinet member for tourism and cultural development, Councillor Bev Ashcroft said: “I am delighted we have so many wonderful Christmas events this year. The Christmas lights switch on is always a special event and as always we have a great lineup of guests and entertainment. I look forward to seeing everyone on the day enjoying the show and the lights.”
