Ewan leads way for second league victory in a row

-

EWAN Withnall celebrated two wins on the trot as a small team of Burton AC athletes travelled to Corby for the second meeting in the North Midlands League.

He was one of four Burton runners in the under-13 boys age group race, Max Bates trying the 3k distance for the first time.

It was no surprise to see Withnall in the leading group of three at the start. The surprise was to see Lewis Boyce, who had been ninth in the first meeting, in the group with him.

This group pulled away and Withnall picked up the pace in the last 1K to pull away with a Derby runner.

He kept a strong pace and opened a 40 metre lead before celebrating another win.

Boyce kept his form and came home a fine third.

With three to score for the team trophy, there was a good run from Aleksander Tutt in ninth which gave the team 13 points. This extends their lead over Charnwood to 48 points.

In the overall league rankings, Withnall, after two wins, leads, while Boyce is fourth, Tutt seventh and Calum Mccarney 15th.

Zola Signori was the first Burton AC member to run, competing in the Under 11 girls race, a slightly longer 2k event. She started slowly but finished strongly for 13th giving her a league ranking of seventh.

Caitlin Mccarney finished second in the U15 girls race, while Connie Lees was 10th.

Although the team only had two runners they are second in the team standings, 30 points behind Derby. In the individual league, Mccarney is second and Lees seventh.

Burton also had runners in the combined U15 boys and U17 girls over 5K. A good run from Sammy Mccafferty saw him finish 11th, moving up to 12th overall.

Saffron Bowley was fifth, while Cara Mccarney and Amelie Brown were close together at 2K before finishing 12th and 17th respectively.

Burton are joint leaders with Derby in this category.

SEVEN Burton teams travelled to Berry Hill Park in Mansfield for the English Cross Country relays.

The under-17 girls had two teams entered for the short 2.5K course.

Maisie Trueman got the A team underway with a strong finish for 16th in 9.33 before Saffron Bowley moved the team up to 14th with a 10.03 leg.

Paige Barker had the final leg and her time of 10.19 meant the team finished 17th out of 60.

The B team was led by Amelie Brown, whose 11.00 put the team 56th. Cara Mccarney started strongly and moved the team to 43rd with 10.26.

Megan Smith had the final leg and finished 40th in 11.04.

Burton also had two teams in the U13 boys race.

Ewan Withnall ran the first leg for the A team and was first in 6.44 before Lewis Boyce’s lap of 7.34 meant the team began the last lap second.

Aleksander Tutt finished the last leg in 8.01 as the team finished 10th out of 72 teams.

The B team of Calum Mccarney (9.03), Daniel Kolodziej (8.15) and Callum Morgan (9.43) finished 50th.
