LOUIS THEROUX INTERVIEWS KATHERINE RYAN

BBC2, 9pm

-

Loosely inspired by American journalist Jake Adelstein’s first-hand account, this crime drama follows the reporter (played by Ansel Elgort, pictured) as he tries to make it big in Tokyo, but he soon runs into trouble in the city’s neon-soaked late 90s underbelly.

Hired as prestigious newspaper Meicho Shimbun’s first foreign reporter, Adelstein finds himself covering seemingly unrelated cases – but quickly grows suspicious that more nefarious forces are at play.

After embedding himself into the Tokyo Metro Police Department, alongside Detective Hiroto Katagiri (Ken Watanabe), he is thrust into a seedy, fast-paced world of corruption, crime, and deception.

Continues after the news. “Were you always funny?” Louis always knows how to get straight to the point and this interview with Canadian comedian, actor and writer Katherine Ryan, pictured below, is another belter.

“I was always odd,” she replies. Since her arrival in the UK 15 years ago Katherine has become one of the UK’S most outspoken performers, and her career has grown from appearances on British panel shows to writing and executive-producing her own stand-up specials and performing across the globe.

Louis is invited to Katherine’s home for a frank conversation about her life, including the experience of raising her now 13-year-old daughter Violet as a single mother.
