Festive markets offer plenty to tempt shoppers

VISITING a Christmas market is the perfect way to get you in the festive spirit. And as we head towards December, folk are looking ahead to December 25.

Festive markets have become a staple for many during the build-up to the big day. It’s the perfect way to bag a few bargains.

Wrapping up warm, enjoying festive drinks like mulled wine, and mince pies, visiting a Christmas Market is great fun for all the family. Fortunatel­y, in the Burton area we are blessed with a number of great markets that are either on our doorstep or a short car journey away. They are the perfect way to spend an afternoon, or even a day soaking up that festive atmosphere.

From the hustle and bustle of the town centre markets to the picturesqu­e and idyllic towns in the Peak District just a few miles over the border into Derbyshire, there are markets in every type of location and bound to be something for everyone to enjoy this season. So whether you’re planning on attending, on a trip with friends, family, or a romantic date, here’s our list of some of the 2022 Christmas markets you might want to consider popping along to this year, which are less than an hour’s drive from Burton. Many of these events coincide with the switching on of Christmas lights which will make for a great time out for all the family.

Burton Christmas Market Where? Burton Market Hall When? Sunday November 27:

A TV antiques expert is one of the famous faces who will be turning on the Christmas lights display in Burton town centre at this year’s Christmas market. Television auctioneer Richard Winterton will be among the big names at the event that attracts thousands.

This year’s switch-on, which takes place on Sunday November 27, has been expanded to include new festive lighting on New Street and Union Street. The lights switch-on event will start from 2pm with family entertainm­ent, competitio­ns and live music on the main stage, hosted by Mark O’sullivan.

Crowds will also be treated to a range of guests including Burton Olympic bronze medallist boxer Frazer Clarke and BRIT nominee DJ Nathan Dawe, who is also from the town. The event will be taking place in Burton town centre and will include a funfair and festive market stalls and is a big one on the calendar for families.

Swadlincot­e Christmas Market Where? High Street When? Saturday, November 26:

This year’s Christmas Market in Swadlincot­e will feature illuminate­d street performers, live festive music, fairground rides and coincides with the town’s Christmas lights switch-on. Throughout the day from 10am to 8pm there will be a craft and gift market at Sharpe’s Pottery Museum.

The Dance and Music Centre will have live entertainm­ent, cake stall, refreshmen­ts, gifts, games and more from 4pm to 8pm. There will also be late night shopping with participat­ing shops, as well as mulled wine, free face painting and falling snow.

National Memorial Arboretum: Where - National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas

When? December 1 to December 17:

National Memorial Arboretum is hosting the Illuminate­d arboretum in Alrewas, as they light up the arboretum after hours and begin the festive season with a kaleidosco­pe of colour. With something to captivate visitors of all ages, Illuminate­d Arboretum will take place across their 150-acre woodland site.

Follow the lit trails and interactiv­e installati­ons through their extensive gardens and enjoy the majesty of the Arboretum at night. Food and drink stalls will also be available at the event. Check the arboretum’s website for more and before you set off.

Christmas fairs at Calke Abbey Where? Calke Abbey, Ticknall, When? Every weekend in December:

Taking place in the Riding School, Christmas fairs will make a highlyanti­cipated return to Calke Abbey this year. Every weekend in December, guests will find festive food, drink and gifts from 10am to 6pm.

The Christmas fairs will still be open on Monday, December 19 and Friday, December 23 from 10am to 6pm to pick up any last-minute gifts. If you’re interested in having a stall at the event, contact Curly Magpie directly.

Penkridge Christmas Market Where? Just off the A449 between junctions 12 and 13 of the M6

When? Sunday, November 27:

A Victorian Christmas Market will have over 100 different stalls set to be selling a wide range of Christmas decoration­s, crafts, gifts and delicious foods perfect for the festive table.
