Sheds and trees went flying as ‘hurricane’ weather hit village

-

RESIDENTS of a Derbyshire village were terrorised by fierce weather during the school run on Thursday, which has been described as resembling a hurricane or tornado.

Reports from Weston on Trent suggest sheds flew across a school’s playground and trees in the area were “snapped” as rain and wind turned into a violent storm.

Lisa Ireland, a mother from the village who was collecting her children from Weston on Trent Primary School at the time, told how she encountered an “intense wind” which meant pupils had to be let out via a different exit.

She said: “At 3pm the weather changed from raining to heavy hail and then intense wind. This lasted about five minutes maybe. Then it appeared to stop and the sky cleared.

“I walked to get my children from the local school and neighbours on Forrester Avenue were out discussing the damage. It was clear that some sort of wild wind had whipped through.

“The children at the school had to be released through a different exit as the damage was so bad to external items. They had witnessed the wind cross the playground and it threw sheds and other things around. A big oak tree was snapped too apparently.”

Ms Ireland also said “fence panels were lifted from one garden” and thrown back into a car with a lady sitting in it “and were thrown over the road”.

She added: “The wind had passed along the fields there damaging farming buildings – I think the fields are the ends of the gardens there. Then it passed through the school area.”
