Mcgoldrick’s late show fires Rams into Cup third round
SIBLEY LEVELS FOR WARNE’S MEN BEFORE WIN CLINCHED AT THE FINISH
DAVID Mcgoldrick hit a late winner for Derby County as the Rams came from behind to book their place in the FA Cup third round.
They trailed 1-0 at half-time against League Two side Newport County but recovered after the break to win the second round clash 2-1 at Rodney Parade.
The Rams failed to trouble Exiles keeper Joe Day in the first half and struggled to match the intensity and physicality of the home side.
And Graham Coughlan’s side took full advantage as they opened the scoring when Priestley Farquharson nodded in a free kick in the 41st minute.
That was enough to spark a double change by Rams head coach Paul Warne at the break as Lewis Dobbin and Tom Barkhuizen were sent on in an attempt to turn the game around.
Mcgoldrick saw a clever lob tipped over the bar before the Rams equalised when Louis Sibley curled home a fine strike in the 54th minute.
The Rams began to play with much more intensity and James Collins was denied by a last-ditch tackle by Scot Bennett.
But Newport still threatened. Rams keeper Joe Wildsmith denied Will Evans before diving low to thwart Cameron Norman following a counter-attack.
However, Mcgoldrick had the final say when he nodded in at the back post following an excellent cross by Sibley.
The Rams will find out who they face in the FA Cup third round tonight when the draw is made at Anfield between 7pm and 7.30pm.
