THERE were delays on the A38 near Burton yesterday after a lorry overturned, leading to traffic building near the Branston interchange.

According to the ambulance service, the lorry driver suffered a suspected medical episode and was taken to hospital in Derby.

Traffic information service Inrix said there were delays on the A38 Lichfield Road in both directions at the A5121 for the Branston Interchange.

Traffic maps showed delays all the way up to the turn-off for Barton. One eye-witness who was driving in the opposite direction said: “It was an aggregates lorry on its side so it looks like A38 northbound will be shut for a few hours.”

A spokesperson from Inrix said: “A38 Lichfield Road both directions at A5121 (Branston Interchange). Accident. Queueing traffic.”

West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called to reports of a single vehicle RTC involving a HGV on the northbound A38, just past the Branston turn-off, at 9.16am. One ambulance, a paramedic officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance Critical Care Car attended the scene.

“On arrival we discovered a lorry that had overturned and one patient, a man. He was the driver of the HGV and had already got himself out of the vehicle. Ambulance crews were told the man had suffered a suspected medical episode prior to the incident. Following assessment, he was taken to Royal Derby Hospital.”

Just before 1pm, Inrix reported that traffic was coping well on the southbound side, although there were still delays on the northbound carriageway.
