Gems display practical and decorative nature of ceramics
YOU have to take your hat off to ceramics thanks to their many forms – both practical and ornamental.
Examples set for auction in December display this beautifully. First to the practical and a Derbymade gem. Lot 296 is a handpainted Royal Crown Derby serving dish, circa 1897, decorated with shipping scenes, estimate £100£150.
Meanwhile lot 141 is purely decorative. It is a late 19th century Yorkshire slipware top hat and rocking chair, circa 1886-88. The ornaments are dedicated to James Baron and Elizabeth Baron. It is
likely they were presented as gifts, estimate £400-£600.
Beauty and practicality combine in lot 190, a blue and white transferprinted Durham Ox-series footed oval comport, circa 1815-20. It is
decorated with cows in a rural landscape, £1,500-£1,800.
