1897:

Charles Jarrott won the first motorcycle race around a track at Sheen House, Richmond.

1975:

British racing driver Graham Hill was killed when the light aircraft he was piloting crashed onto Arkley Golf Course near Elstree in Hertfordsh­ire. Also killed was Tony Brise, a promising young driver who was to spearhead Hill’s new Embassy team.

2006:

England rugby head coach Andy Robinson stood down after a record of nine wins and 13 losses during his two years in charge.

2010:

England’s cricketers drew the first Test against Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane. They went on to take the series 3-1 for their first Ashes success Down Under since 1986-87.

2015:

Great Britain won the Davis Cup for the first time since 1936 as Andy Murray inspired a 3-1 success against Belgium.

2016:

A plane carrying 22 players from Brazilian football team Chapecoens­e, along with 23 coaching and other staff, two guests and 21 journalist­s, crashed in Colombia, killing 71 of 77 people on board.

2019:

Unai Emery was sacked as Arsenal manager after seven games without a win. Freddie Ljungberg took charge on a caretaker basis.

2021:

Manchester United hired Ralf Rangnick as interim manager until the end of the season and also handed the German, who replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, a further two-year deal as a consultant.
