Mcgoldrick admits, we needed a rocket

MATCH-WINNER David Mcgoldrick admitted the Derby County team “needed a little rocket” at half-time in their FA Cup tie away to Newport County.

The Rams were poor in the first half against the Welsh club and trailed when Priestley Farquharson nodded in a free kick in the 41st minute.

Lewis Dobbin and Tom Barkhuizen were sent on at halftime and Derby improved.

Louie Sibley equalised with a good curling shot after 54 minutes and, just as a replay loomed, Mcgoldrick popped up to nudge in Sibley’s cross for a 2-1 win with three minutes left.

The forward had earlier seen a clever lob tipped over the bar.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game. In the first half we were way below our best and we went down 1-0 and that’s how it should be,” Mcgoldrick told ITV

Sport after the game.

“We knew we had to come out in the second half and make changes.

“We came out on the front foot and we came out with the win, which is the most important thing in an FA Cup tie.”

On the first half performance,

Mcgoldrick added: “We weren’t at the races. I don’t know if we came here expecting to play too much football, we weren’t given the time to do that.

“They got a lot of long throws, long balls on to us.

“We had to fight and compete, and we needed a little rocket up us in the second half to come back and battle.”

Head coach Paul Warne added: “We changed our system and it was like chalk and cheese in the second half. It was like the team I want to manage.

“We had a bit more pace, we crossed it, had more shots and we could have won at a canter in the end.

“At half-time, I told them a few home truths. It’s our job to tell them straight.

“If they disagree they can come back at me and nobody did.

“I said to them at the end of the game that I felt the first half was the old Derby County and the second half was new Derby.”
