New records set in annual Champs

SIX records were broken at Burton Swimming Club’s annual swimming championsh­ips.

Matt Gates set new benchmarks in the open 100m individual medley and 400m IM, while Charlie Moorby beat the club best times for the open 200m and 100m freestyle.

And Sophie Fowkes broke the open 100m butterfly record as well as setting a new club best time for the 400m IM.

In the trophy table, Edwards Frost took the boys top prize after six wins, with Gates second on five and Josh Cooper third with four.

Sienna Moss and Fowkes were joint top for the girls trophy with five wins, while Ellie Wan was second with four.

Over the three nights, 291 personal bests were set and 58 county qualifying times were achieved.

The club now has a record 36 swimmers who have qualified for the 2023 Staffordsh­ire County Championsh­ips.

In the girls age eight group, Wan won the freestyle, backstroke and breastroke, while in the age nine category May Swift won the breaststro­ke and backstroke, Ruby Coton won the freestyle and Wan won the butterfly.

Olive Harvey won the freestyle and backstroke in the age 10 girls group, while Alexia Pickering won the butterfly and Sophie Woodhall won the breaststro­ke.

Moss won five events in the age 11-12 group, while Molly Hull won the 200m freestyle and 50m backstroke.

In the age 13-14 category, Bella Richards won the 200m IM, 100m freestyle and butterfly, Issy Reid won the 200m freestyle, 100m backstroke and 100 IM, while Olivia Standley won the 100m breaststro­ke.

Fowkes won five open age events and Charlie Moorby won the 200m freestyle, 100m freestyle and 100m IM.

In the boys events, Owen Sillito won the backstroke and breaststro­ke in the age eight category, with Seb Rooney winning the freestyle.

William Hughes won the butterfly and freestyle in the age nine group, with Monty Waterman winning breaststro­ke and Arthur Hull finishing first in the backstroke.

Eli Hickey won the breaststro­ke and backstroke in the age 10 section, while Toby Gallagher won the butterfly and Charlie Dyche won the freestyle.

Edward Frost won six events in the age 11-12 group, while Thomas Hollis led the way in the breaststro­ke. Josh Cooper won four events in the age 13-14 category, Daniel Spiers won the 200m IM and breaststro­ke, while Tyler Bullivant won the freestyle.

Gates won five open events, George Greener won the 100m breaststro­ke and 200m IM, while Jack Ward won the backstroke.

In the masters, joint head coach Simon Ward won three events including a superb race against fellow head coach Ian Gates in the breaststro­ke.

Course championsh­ips which took place at the Alan Higgs Centre in Coventry.

Oliver Frost, Bella Richards, Georgia Ulyett, Rosie Bolton, Tom Mitchell, Ohla Tytarenko and Sophie Fowkes flew the flag for the club, as Jack Ward and George Greener were away at university.

Richards and Bolton began by recording some fine 100m backstroke times, while Tytarenko’s performanc­e in the 200m breaststro­ke, and Frost and Gates’ swims in the 50m butterfly were the other highlights on day one.

On day two, all eight swimmers took part. Frost swam an amazing PB in the 100m backstroke, Mitchell and Gates did well in the 100m butterfly, while Tytarenko, Richards, Fowkes, Ulyett and Bolton impressed in the sprint butterfly, backstroke and medley races.
