Roll of Honour - April 1944

WING, WILLIAM CYRIL:

Merchant Navy Boatswain (Bosun), HM Barge Gold Bell died due to illness on 17th April 1944 age 45. Son of William and Angela Wing.

LAND, GILBERT SAMUEL:

Private, 1st Battalion Northampto­nshire Regiment, died on 18th April 1944, aged 19. Son of Joseph and Georgina Land of Hilton.

HAYWOOD, ROBERT CHARLES:

Sapper, 604 Railway Constructi­on Company, Royal Engineers died on 22nd April 1944, age 24. Son of Frank and Fanny Haywood of Anglesey Road and husband of Sylvia Haywood of Shaftsbury Street, Derby.

Sapper Haywood had been abroad for three years serving in India and North Africa where he took ill. He was returned to England where unfortunat­ely he died in hospital.

LOVEROCK, WILLIAM HENRY:

Sergeant 77 Squadron RAFVR, killed in action on 24th April 1944, age 19. Son of Henry and Florence Loverock of Uxbridge Street, Burton. Sergeant Loverock’s aircraft was shot down by an enemy night fighter at Hjelms near Skskobing during a minelaying sortie to Rostack.

BRUNT, EDWARD:

Flight Sergeant Air Bomber, 619 Squadron RAF Volunteer Reserve killed in action on 25th April 1944 aged 22. Son of Mr & Mrs. F.W. Brunt of Derby Road, husband of Violet E. Brunt of Kitling Greave Lane, Burton.

Edward was on his last operationa­l flight when he was killed, this happened before he was to be grounded in order to take a commission.

ADEY, ROYSTON JOHN EDWARD:

Flight Sergeant (Pilot) 613 Squadron. RAF, killed in action on 27th April 1944, age 21. Son of Ronald and Edith Adey of Anglesey Arms Public House, Winshill. Crashed at Enschede during a sortie to Twente, Netherland­s.

HOLFORD, WILLIAM LESLIE:

Sergeant (Flight Engineer) 83

Squadron RAF Volunteer Reserve killed in action on 27th April 1944 age 32. Youngest son of Mr & Mrs. John Holford of Curragh Lodge, Tatenhill and husband of Clara Holford formerly of Uxbridge Street, Burton.

On the night of the 26/27th April his plane was attacked on the return from a raid causing the plane to crash in Germany - all the crew lost their lives.

MAXWELL, HENRY ASHWORTH:

Corporal, RAF Volunteer Reserve died on 31st April 1944, aged 30. Son of Henry and Ellen Maxwell, husband of Sylvia Maxwell of Yardley, Birmingham.
