Young rowers enjoy News ‘oar-some’ success
FEMALE SQUADS TAKE HOME MEDALS FROM NATIONAL REGATTA
YOUNG rowers from Burton won big representing the East Midlands at a national competition.
Junior rowers, aged 13 to 16, from the two rowing clubs based in Burton competed in the national Junior Inter-regional Regatta (JIRR).
Organised by British Rowing, the event took place at Holme Pierrepont National Water Sports Centre, in Nottingham, on April 20.
Madison Walker and Jessica Atkin, from Trent Rowing Club, won a gold medal in the women’s junior 14 double sculls.
Meanwhile, the women’s junior 15 coxed four – Megan Cheetham (cox), Alice Shaw, Olivia Miller, Beatrice Paulaityte and Ania Kunicka – won a bronze medal.
They all row for Trent Rowing Club except Beatrice, who represents Burton Leander Rowing Club.
Karl Benton, captain of Trent Rowing Club, said: “I’m very proud of the performance of all our junior members who participated in the JIRR last weekend.
“It was particularly rewarding to see a number of composite crews competing – bringing Trent and Burton Leander Rowing Clubs together to compete on behalf of the East Midlands.
“Congratulations to our two women’s crews who successfully won medals in their events, this is a huge achievement at a national British Rowing competition.
“These achievements also contributed to the East Midlands winning the prestigious Victor Ludorum trophy for the most successful female crews on the day.”
The rowers took part in regional trials on the challenging River Witham at Boston in March, to compete in the national finals.
Other rowers who also competed in Nottingham were:
■ Charlie Kilvert, from Trent Rowing Club, who participated in the Open Junior 16 Single Sculls.
■ Molly Clark, Molly Kibbler, Matilda Leigh and Holly Stonehouse, from Burton Leander Rowing Club, who qualified for the Women’s Junior 16 Coxless Quad.
■ Olivia Miller and Alice Shaw, from Trent Rowing Club, who both qualified for the two places to represent the East Midlands in the Women’s Junior 15 Single Sculls.
■ Richard Botyanszki and Tristan Shaw, from Burton Leander Rowing Club, who participated in the Open Junior 15 Double Sculls.
■ Daniel Langley and Nathan Madeley, from Trent Rowing Club, together with Jacob Clark and Henry Hardwicke, from Burton Leander Rowing Club, who competed together in the Open Junior 14 Coxed Quad event.
