Hinkley Point B plant faces early closure
Hinkley Point B might go dark more than a year ahead of schedule, according to its owner EDF, writes Ed Clowes.
The nuclear plant in Somerset, which opened in 1976, is currently shut for maintenance after safety issues were spotted by the nuclear watchdog. Britain’s remaining nuclear stations are all facing the same safety issues involving cracks emerging in the graphite core of their reactors.
EDF has said decommissioning Hinkley might need to be brought forward by a year to 2022.
Experts have warned that when the UK’s fleet of nuclear power stations go dark, the country will be left with a hole in how much electricity it can generate.
