26 The Daily Telegraph Monday 14 September 2020 *** Sport Racing Mogul finally delivers for O’Brien but misses Arc even though he was Ryan Moore’s mount at Epsom and first string, the tag seemed to rest heavily on his shoulders, he still looked burly and was beaten seven lengths into sixth. He finally got his head in front when he won Goodwood’s Gordon Stakes, but he appeared to take another backward step when well beaten by Pyledriver in the Great Voltigeur at York. The French Arc trials are traditionally run at the same pace as a slow bicycle race with a two-furlong sprint up the straight as the Prix Vermeille, won by Dermot Weld’s Tarnawa later in the afternoon, and Prix Foy were, but O’Brien ensured a strong pace in the Grand Prix by sending Nobel Prize as a pacemaker. Serpentine was held up in fourth by Christophe Soumillon, while Mogul, ridden by Pierre-Charles Boudot, was put to sleep at the back. But he looked a different horse ridden for speed off a strong pace. “He was starting to show too much speed,” said O’Brien of Mogul. “So we told P-C to ride him for speed and drop him on the line. We were thinking we might go back to a mile and a quarter after this.” Anthony Van Dyck was winning for the first time since last year’s Derby when he beat Stradivarius a short-neck in the Foy. Owner Bjorn Nielsen remains committed to the Arc with Stradivarius, though Frankie Dettori is likely to pick Enable as his mount. Weld’s Tarnawa beat the red-hot French filly Raabihah three lengths, with the runner-up, ridden at the back, another to be caught out by a sprint finish. Tarnawa would have to be supplemented for the Arc, and winning jockey Soumillon’s advice was to come back for the Prix de l’Opera on the same day. Back home, Weld completed a big day by winning the Irish St Leger with Search For A Song. Otherwise it was yet another remarkable afternoon for all the training members of the O’Brien family with all three of them winning Group One races. de facto RACING CORRESPONDENT By Marcus Armytage Forgotten colt comes good for impressive win in French trial Serpentine finishes fourth but set to return to Longchamp Aidan O’Brien’s three-year-olds, finally came good at the highest level when he ran out an impressive winner of the Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris, the most meaningful of the three trials over course and distance yesterday. But his options include possible trips to Britain (for the Champions Stakes) Australia, the United States or Hong Kong this autumn, but not the Arc, apart from anything else because his trainer has a surfeit of possibles for the great French race. Mogul’s Derby-winning stablemate Serpentine finished 4½ lengths back in fourth, although O’Brien was satisfied with that and Neither Love nor Enable, first and second favourite respectively for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, will have lost much sleep last night after the French trials seemed to throw up more questions than answers yesterday. At least two of the three winners, all Irish, are unlikely to return to Longchamp in three weeks’ time for the Arc. Mogul, the forgotten colt among Serpentine is expected to be on the flight to Paris in October with Love, Magical and possibly Anthony Van Dyck, who landed a second trial for O’Brien when he beat Stradivarius in an unsuitably slow-run Prix Foy. During the winter Mogul was Ballydoyle’s “Derby horse” but, Database Vitality T20 Blast - North Group Basketball Rugby League Horse Racing results Bath P W L T NR Pts RR J H Davey not out O R T Sale not out Extras (b1 lb2 w7 nb2) (for 8, 20 overs) 6 2 12 Notts Lancashire Leicestershire Yorkshire Durham Derbyshire 7 6 7 6 7 7 5 3 2 2 2 0 0 1 2 2 4 5 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 2 3 2 1 2 12 8 7 6 5 2 1.46 0.39 -0.63 1.43 -0.21 -2.00 NBA.-Play-offs: Los Angeles Lakers 119 Houston Rockets 96 (Los Angeles Lakers win series 4-1)-Denver 111 Los Angeles Clippers 98 (Los Angeles Clippers lead besy-of-7 series 3-2).
