Konta grateful to end long winless run

- By Simon Briggs

The lovely setting of the Nottingham Open acted like a revitalising draught of water for a parched Johanna Konta – the British No1 who was coming off a six-week winless streak.

Konta responded in fine style, dispatching Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove, the world No 177 of Holland, in straight sets to end her drought.

After her 6-1, 6-3 victory, Konta expressed her enthusiasm for the whole experience – which, with any luck, could mark the turning point of a frustrating season. “Playing in front of a home crowd makes me very happy and is very enjoyable,” she said. “I feel very grateful.”

Tomorrow’s third-round match will bring top seed Konta up against Kateryna Kozlova, of Ukraine, the world No159.
