RGC storm to 71-0 win
MARK Jones made a winning start as RGC’s new head coach as the North Wales side put in a dominant display against Chester to retain the Anglo-Welsh Challenge Trophy with a 71-0 victory last Friday night.
In a match played over three 25-minute periods at Hare Lane, RGC ran in 11 unanswered tries to give former Wales wing Jones the perfect start after being unveiled earlier in the week.
Jones said: “I have been here less than a week, so it hasn’t been a huge amount of time with the boys but we looked at a couple of aspects in training.
“One area was depth in our play when we had try-scoring opportunities, and we did that – so it was good to see that we transferred what we worked on during the week into a game.
“That said, we did leave a few tries out there so that gives us something to work on before the game at Worcester.”
Jones added: “Our forwards looked solid and that gave us a good platform for our backs.
“Credit to our defence as well, who worked hard at keeping a keen and hungry Chester side to nil points.
“We will have some recovery before being back at training Monday and Tuesday in preparation for Worcester on Wednesday.
“Another plus is that we didn’t pick up any injuries.
“It is still pre-season and they boys are playing when they are tired, but we know it is not about results but making sure we are fully prepared for our first Premiership game in September.”
Among the try-scorers for RGC were Rhys Williams, Tim Grey, Tiaan Loots, Andrew Williams and Tom Hughes, with Sam Jones crossing for a hat-trick.
