Winning start as Caernarfon see off visitors

-

CAERNARFON Town began their latest season in the North Wales Women’s Football League in style with a 3-0 win over former champions Denbigh Town.

The hosts started the game brightly and forced Denbigh onto the back foot, forcing several corners in the first 15 minutes, although the set pieces were well defended and came to nothing.

The away team were gradually coming into the match and almost took the lead on 15 minutes when Chelsea Williams fired in a 20-yard drive which missed the target by millimeters.

Caernarfon took the lead on 25 minutes when, from a throw in, Catrin Thomas turned a defender and drove the ball goalwards. Denbigh keeper Amber Dean produced a fine save but the ball rebounded to Anna Jones who fired home.

The game was now evenly balanced with neither side able to create a clear cut chance until two minutes before half time when new Denbigh signing Ceri Redman burst into the box and was brought down for a penalty.

Up stepped Llio Hafal but the defender was leaning back and the spot kick went over the bar.

Things went from bad to worse for Denbigh five minutes into the second half when Caernarfon were awarded a penalty themselves with Hafal adjudged to have pushed an attacker in the box. Katie Davies stepped up and dispatched the kick into the bottom left-hand corner of the net.

Denbigh made a tactical switch to try to get back into the game and began to get the upper hand pushing the home side back.

Although the visitors were now on top Caernarfon were defending well and looking dangerous on the break.

From one of these breaks on 75 minutes Ceri Slaney made the most of an error by a Denbigh defender, raced clear and calmly slotted home from close range.

Although 3-0 down Denbigh never gave up and continued to press, but Caernarfon kept a clean sheet.

Elsewhere, Pwllheli were held 1-1 by Llanfair, Lowri Hughes netting for the home side.
