SEARCH ON FOR THE WORLD’S BEST BARA BRITH

-

BAKERS from all over the world are expected to take part when the first ever World Bara Brith Championship comes to Llandudno.

Cooks will be able to send their entries by post, while a network of pick-up points around Wales will be provided for the contest held in partnership with the Llandudno Christmas Bakers.

“We do expect entries from around the globe, with bakers from Japan expressing interest,” said Geraint Hughes, of sponsors Jones Crisps. “It’s no surprise really when you think how popular bara brith is – it’s one of Wales’ top food treasures.”

Judge Tegwen Morris, national director of Merched y Wawr, said: “We have decided to keep the criteria as broad as possible to encourage variation, although it may well make our task more difficult. We will be requesting that each entry is supplied with a list of ingredients, as that will help the judging process.”

Jim Jones, managing director of Go North Wales, who recently wrote a blog on bara brith, said: “What better way to raise the profile of one of our most iconic Welsh food products than by hosting the first ever World Bara Brith Championship?”

Entries must be in by November 17, and judging will take place the following day. The winner’s bara brith will be produced by artisan bakers to be sold to the public, with the victorious baker getting a cash prize of £100 and a year’s supply of Jones Crisps. Entries can be taken in person to Trinity Church, Llandudno, between 5pm-7pm on November 17.
