Quilt-essential

- with Joy Burgess

WE are back with the Dyffryn Conwy U3A Patchwork and Quilting Group this week, as Gill Meyer tells us more about this fascinating craft.

“There is so much to say about Patchwork and Quilting that we are delighted to have been given a second week to write more about the variety of purposes that this craft can be used for. The things we make are often sewn with a particular person in mind.

“For example, one member has made full sized bed quilts for her grandchildren and all are very different in style and colour depending on the interests and colour preferences of the recipients. One quilt has hand painted flowers for a keen gardener. Another uses images and colours inspired by the sea. One member has made a memory quilt for her daughter’s marriage. Signatures of all the wedding guests were embroidered onto the quilt as a permanent and individual souvenir.

“Another example is a bed topper which used favourite ties as a memory of a loved husband. You might have a blouse, shirt or dress which you could use and so the elements of your patchwork will bring back lovely memories. Some of us have made baby mats for new grandchildren and lap quilts to snuggle under on the sofa – these make lovely gifts.

“There are lots of lovely patterns and techniques to use for beautiful and unique cushions, and one member is tackling new curtains for her lounge. Smaller projects like shopping bags, purses, wall hangings and pictures, and patchwork covered boxes and book covers all make lovely presents. Christmas and Easter are great times to make all sorts of exciting small gifts or decorations.

“There are shops which sell materials especially for patchwork and it is great going out to buy material for the next project and have fun laying the chosen bolts side by side to see if they work together, but it is also fun to go to charity shops and seek out a shirt or dress in your chosen colours. Or you might have a selection of things stuffed in a drawer at home which you could use to make something delightful and unique to you.”
