Port home to Colliers in Cup

- by Gareth Williams

PORTHMADOG have secured another all-Huws Gray Alliance home tie in the Welsh Cup.

Following last Saturday’s comfortable 4-0 home victory over Caersws at Y Traeth, Port will next welcome Gresford Athletic in round two on the weekend of November 4, 5 and 6.

Craig Papirnyk’s men started well against ‘Sws, Gareth Jones Evans sending keeper Luke Evans scrambling back towards his own goal with a dangerous effort from 25 yards. Evans was relieved to palm the ball away at full stretch.

Then it was Tyler French in the action for Port, twice saving sharp shots from Sean Evans.

Port’s Chris Jones put through Jamie McDaid after 28 minutes, but keeper Evans was quickly off his line to block the shot.

Caersws man Luke K Evans won the ball midway inside the Port half and forced French into a good save low at the foot of the post.

Then with 36 minutes gone, the goal finally came for Port, and what a peach it was.

Julian Williams received the ball in space 35 yards out and struck a superb shot which dipped late into the corner of the net.

Port started the second half strongly and looked likely from the off to increase their slender lead. It took just eight minutes for this to happen with Chris Jones setting up an excellent goal.

He won the ball well in the Caersws half and sent an excellent low cross to the far post, where Gareth Jones Evans finished from close range.

While the score was 2-0, the Bluebirds sensed there was a chance to get back into the tie.

Lance Jones tested French with a low shot, and later Josh Hartrick, at the back post, met a dangerous cross from Jack Hughes, but found the side-netting.

Port then stepped up another gear, scoring twice to secure entry into the second round.

Chris Jones broke to the edge of the box, holding off two defenders and netting with an emphatic finish.

Then with four minutes remaining Joe Williams added a fourth goal, firing coolly just inside the post.

Port are in knockout action again this Saturday when they visit Conwy Borough in the Huws Gray Cup.

The Traeth men won 5-1 at Y Morfa in the league last month.
