Cofis travel to face Caersws in knockout clash

- Football by Paul Evans

CAERNARFON Town will look to keep up their dazzling form in knockout competitions when they travel to Caersws in the Huws Gray Cup this Saturday.

The Canaries make the journey to Powys on a real high after thumping Conwy Borough 5-1 away in the Welsh Cup last Friday.

That result sealed Iwan Williams’ men a second-round trip to Welsh Alliance League club Llangefni Town next month.

Caernarfon took an 11th-minute lead at Conwy when a Darren Thomas shot came back off the post and Nathan Craig followed up to blast home the rebound.

Thomas and Jamie Breese set up the impressive Danny Brookwell to make it two, before Cory Williams missed a great chance to add a third just before half time when he headed wide.

The ever-lively Thomas gave Town the perfect start to the second half when he added a third goal from close range.

Thomas was denied by a marvellous save from Scott Williams, but the Cofis striker made it 4-0 on 75 minutes via a penalty after his shot struck the hand of Chris Quinn.

Joe Chaplin pulled one back for the Tangerines, but Cory Williams had the last word by heading in Caernarfon’s fifth.

Current Huws Gray Cup holders Caernarfon are aiming to win the competition for a joint record-equalling fourth time this season.

Saturday’s opponents Caersws lifted the trophy themselves back in 2014/15.

The Mid Wales side visited the Roberts Oval for a league game a fortnight ago and made it tough for the Cofis as they grabbed a 1-1 draw. ● Caernarfon Town Reserves host Prestatyn Town this Friday, 7.30pm kick-off.
