GRIEVING MUM UNABLE TO GET FULL TRIBUTE TO DAUGHTER

Friend launches campaign fund for headstone

A CROWDFUNDING campaign has been launched to buy a gravestone for a four-month-old baby who died earlier this year.

Little Scarlett Eluned Elizabeth Hughes passed away on January 11 due to suspected cot death, otherwise known as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

While Scarlett’s grave at Macpeleh Cemetery in Penygroes, near Caernarfon, is marked only by a cross, Jasmin Hughes wants to buy her daughter a headstone as a permanent legacy of her short life.

But Jasmin is a single parent unable to work due to depression following her daughter’s death.

Now one of her best friends has set up a crowdfunding page to raise the £1,000 target. Samantha Lewis said: “Jasmin’s an amazing woman who is trying her best to make sure Scarlett’s grave is as beautiful as she was.

“Jasmin’s trying her best and gave Scarlett the best send off you can give.

“But as she has no income, she’s heartbroken she can’t afford to give Scarlett a gravestone.

“As her friend, I’m asking the world to help this poor girl give her daughter what she deserves.”

Jasmin, from Talysarn in Dyffryn Nantlle, said not a day goes by when she doesn’t think about her little girl.

The 20-year-old added: “The only thing I can do now is make sure Scarlett has as beautiful a grave as I can.

“At the moment, her resting place is only marked by a cross, and I can’t stand it. But there’s no way I can buy a proper grave for her.

“I can’t thank Samantha enough for all she’s done in starting the fundraising page, as well as everyone else who has been supportive in any way.”

There are roughly 300 cot deaths a year in the UK, mostly likely among babies aged between four and six months.

During Scarlett’s inquest in May, the pathologist said there was nothing that could have been done to save Scarlett’s life.

Dr Mark Lord said: “We see fewer and fewer of these deaths, but there are occasions where we simply cannot find a medical reason.

“Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is a conclusion we come to when we exclude everything else that we know could possibly have happened.”
