RGC’s women get ready for regional rugby

-

RGC senior women’s side recently held their first training session at Eirias as the preparation for regional rugby began.

It was the first chance for coaching staff to have a look at the players from across the region.

One person looking forward to the journey is current Wales international Rachel Taylor, who plays club rugby for Caernarfon.

She said: “It is great to have the side under the RGC umbrella, and to be training out of Eirias will also bring us closer to the whole set-up. Last season the under-18s put in a great performance, and it was important to create that pathway of progression, otherwise they will be lost.”

Taylor is currently training for the Rugby World Cup, and knows the importance of the support within a rugby set-up.

She said: “Having the strong support in coaching, medical and analyst staff will clearly benefit those new to regional rugby, along with the North Wales-based players who have been playing further afield.”

Last month it was ● Rachel Taylor announced that RGC will compete against Cardiff Blues, Dragons, Scarlets and Ospreys for the upcoming season.

Pre-season training will lead to final squads named in September, in preparation for a ‘Super 5s’ event: a full day of rugby involving all regions and both age groups.

With this year’s new structure, the Welsh Rugby Union aims to augment the excellent work carried out by the regions during the past season, as well as continuing to strengthen the ties between club, region and country.

The integration of U18 and senior women’s fixtures will see their games played on the same day, at the same venue.

The WRU has appointed new coaching teams across the five regions, overseen by regional leads.

RGC’s structure is - lead: David Roberts; coaches: Grace Jones, Simon Dignam, Anthony Probert, Paul Craft, Marc Roberts and Jennifer Davies.
