Venue and cafe hit by burglars again
‘DISHEARTENING’ BURGLARIES AT WELL-KNOWN RESTAURANT
A BUSINESS owner at one of North Wales’ best-known comedy venues has spoken of her heartbreak over the number of break-ins at the site since the spring.
Mandy Owen, 32, who runs Ty Golchi near Bangor, spoke to our sister paper the Daily Post about how the popular restaurant and venue had suffered four burglaries since March, with the first three happening just after they had taken it over.
She said: “We took over in early March from Tudur Owen, within the first month of starting we had three break-ins. And now we’ve discovered we had another overnight.
“In the first break-in, they took the till drawer, wine and some beer. In the second, they were scared away by the alarm, and in the third they took a bag full of foreign coins that we had collected.
“This time they took one pound worth of loose change, a bottle of whiskey and a bottle of Martini.”
The popular venue is well known for its association with Welsh comedian Tudur Owen, who Mandy said had supported her and partner Ben Jones since the thefts began.
“I would tell people to keep an eye out in the area for any suspicious behaviour, we’ve never experienced anything like this before,” she said.
“It’s very disheartening, I don’t want to be waking up every morning thinking will there have been another break-in. We’re trying to make a go of this business and it’s very upsetting that this keeps happening.
Due to the frequency of the early burglaries, Miss Owen raised the issue with her MP, Hywel Williams.
He said: “I raised concerns about past break-ins at Tŷ Golchi with North Wales Police when I was first notified of an incident at the address earlier this year. I was advised that issues surrounding security were discussed with the owners and sought assurances that measures would be taken to reassure staff who were justifiably concerned.
“I’m alarmed to hear of yet another incident and will be making enquiries regarding developments.”
