GOING, GOING GONE ... HISTORIC VILLAGE PUB DEMOLISHED
THIS is the moment a village pub immortalised in song by one of Wales’ most popular artists was demolished.
The Quarryman’s Arms was the last of five pubs in the village of Llanllyfni, near Caernarfon, to close when it called time in 2012 after a suspected arson attack.
An application to demolish the pub – known locally as Y Cwari – was approved by Gwynedd council earlier this year, with the applicants citing the the building was unsafe and had no envisaged current or future use.
According to Caernarfonbased Wakemans Ltd, the premises were also attracting anti-social behaviour.
The pub was the subject of Quarry (Man’s Arms), a song made famous by Bryn Fon of Sobin a’r Smaeliaid in 1992, which described it as an ideal location for a “sgwrs dda a jôc” (good chat and a joke).
Local county councillor Craig ap Iago said he wanted to see the site developed as a community facility.
“There’s no doubt that the Quarry was a much cherished village pub for many years,” he said.
“But the sad fact is that it had become so dilapidated it was a health and safety risk so it had to come to this.
“I’d like to see the site developed for something the community can use, such as a clubhouse for the village football team, who could really do with a hub of some sort.” Pictures: Llyr Hughes
