RIDER ON THE STORM

-

THIS surfer was enticed onto the huge waves whipped up by Storm Ophelia last week.

He was one of many spotted at Trefor as the Llyn Peninsula was battered by gusts of up to 90mph.

Victoria Taylor, from nearby Pontllyfni, who snapped the daredevils in action, said: “I didn’t fancy going into the water myself, it was a bit too rough for me.

“I think there were about six people out there surfing. When it got to about 5pm it got really heavy for about an hour or two.”

The 25-year-old added: “They were very experienced. There is no way anyone should go out in that weather unless they really knew what they were doing.”

RNLI lifesaving manager, Matt Crofts, echoed Miss Taylor’s warning that surfers should know their limits.

“Most surfers have a good understanding of the risks involved,” he said. “Those new to surfing can lack the experience needed to manage difficult conditions or to surf outside lifeguarded areas.

“The RNLI would always recommend surfers surf with a friend, especially in a big swell. Always tell someone you’re going surfing, when and where you are going out, and, importantly, when you expect to be back.”

Mr Crofts added: “Everyone should know their limit. It’s easy to be caught out, so don’t challenge yourself to do things outside of your own capabilities.

“This advice is especially timely with the strong winds and high tides forecast for Wales, which are likely to create big waves.”
