Celts into the play-offs

-

BLAENAU Amateurs recovered from conceding an early goal to whip hosts Llanfairpwll 5-1 in Welsh Alliance Division Two last Saturday.

Iwan Jones 2, Sion Aron Roberts, Rhodri Pugh and Kieron Ellis shared the Quarrymen’s goals.

In Division One, Llanberis shared the spoils with Penrhyndeudraeth 0-0, while Pwllheli went down 5-2 at home to leaders Llangefni Town, Jason Banks and Martin Smith for the hosts. CAERNARFON Celts basketball seniors’ final league game of the season saw them defeat Deeside Dragons 62-53.

In a match where the victors would secure a play-off spot as the fourth seed, Celts were determined to prolong their season.

A fantastic team display in the first quarter from the local team, led by the in-form Aled Jones, ended with them 17-12 ahead.

At the completion of a tight second quarter, the Caernarfon side were 31-25 in front.

A dramatic third quarter edged by the Dragons 16-14 meant Celts would have to play one of their best final sessions of the season to stave off their opponents.

A dominant performance on the boards from Niall Williams alongside Ezefor Victory closed out the Dragons offence and created a string of scoring opportunities for the Celts, mostly finished by the on-fire Williams. Celts ended up winners by nine points.

MVP was Aled Jones with Niall Williams top-scoring with 27 points.

Celts next face top seed and regular season champions Brewers Basketball in the North Wales Basketball Association Senior League Play-off semi-final tomorrow (Thursday) at Ellesmere Port.
