Canaries soaring into top flight after victory

-

NEFYN United reached their third final of the season as they saw off Beaumaris Town 4-2 in the Bob Owen Memorial Shield.

Tristan Parry (2), Mark Jones and Ifan Jones struck for the Penwaig, who will now meet Bro Goronwy, 2-1 winners at Waunfawr, where Meurig Parry scored for the Beganifs, in the showpiece match next month.

Nefyn will take on Gwalchmai in the Safeflue Shield Final at Porthmadog this Friday (7.45pm).

In the Gwynedd League, Llanystumdwy were beaten 3-1 at Holyhead Town in a battle of the top two. Both level on points before the start, ‘Stumdwy took the lead with an own goal early in the second half, but Asa Thomas (2) and Tom Hadley turned the tables in favour of the Harbourmen.

Tomos Usher’s penalty was not enough to save Talysarn Celts from a 3-1 home loss against Llangoed.

Last Wednesday, Sion Parry notched a hat-trick as Llanystumdwy moved level on points with Holyhead Town at the Gwynedd League summit with a 4-0 victory over Bontnewydd.

Glyn Jones struck twice as Talysarn Celts defeated Nefyn United 2-0.

CAERNARFON Town’s coronation as 2017/18 Huws Gray Alliance League champions was confirmed last Wednesday when they clinched a second title in three seasons with a 5-0 victory at Llandudno Junction.

Unlike on the last occasion – the Canaries finished top of the second-tier league in 2015-16 when the lack of a Domestic Licence cost them dear – this time everything is in order and their triumph will lead to promotion back to the Welsh Premier.

Caernarfon had proved often in recent seasons, with fine performances against WPL clubs in cup competitions, that they were worthy of top-flight status

Now they have rejoined the elite the next task will be staying there.

The basis for success is in place – a talented squad with a nice blend of experience and youth, an ambitions young manager in Sean Eardley and a passionate board and committee.

Eardley, who since taking over as Cofis boss last November is still to lose a league game, was delighted to secure the title in style at the Arriva Ground.

“To see the sea of yellow and green behind the goal was unbelievable,” said the manager, in tribute to the fantastic travelling support.

“I’m made up for the boys; it’s been a colossal effort in what has been a very competitive league.

“We knew the challenge that was ahead of us but the lads have risen to it,” he continued.

“We’re ready to go up and give it a right go – I’m going to be buzzing for the challenge come the first day.” .

Caernarfon’s 5-0 win at Junction made it 25 league matches undefeated for The Oval club.

The Cofis had already sealed promotion to the WPL, but they were intent on going up as champions.

Junction defended stoically during and beyond the first quarter, but the breakthrough finally arrived in the 27th minute.

Nathan Craig’s delivery to the far post was met by Rhys Roberts, who nodded across the six-yard box. While keeper Tom Hooson managed to keep Danny Brookwell’s header out, the ball dropped to Darren Thomas, who made no mistake from close range.

The mercurial Thomas doubled Town’s lead in the 38th minute when he met an excellent Jamie Breese cross to head across Hooson into the far corner of his net.

Caernarfon looked sharper after the break and top-scorer Breese put them three ahead two minutes after the restart when he latched onto a loose ball in the penalty area after Hooson had blocked Gareth Edwards’ fine header.

Gareth Evans was the recipient of Picture: PAUL EVANS some good fortune four minutes later when he chased after a long clearance from keeper Alex Ramsay. The ball rebounded off Hooson against Evans and into an empty goal.

The impressive Chris Williams rounded off the scoring on the hour mark when he latched onto a loose ball on the edge of the Junction area and lashed it through traffic and into the roof of the net.

Town will be handed the league trophy after their final league fixture against Gresford at Airbus Broughton on Friday.
