Chaplin provides the smiles in a Port rout

-

PWLLHELI rose up to fourth in the North Wales Women’s Football League after hammering Prestatyn 7-1 last Sunday.

Goals were shared between Lia Roberts (2), Lois Thomas (2), Hanna Thomas, Leanne Rees Hughes and Hayley Williams.

Other scores: Airbus 4 Bangor City 3, Llanfair United 9 Amlwch Town 0.

PORTHMADOG ended their recent goal famine in style with a 6-0 away thrashing of FC Queen’s Park in the Huws Gray Alliance League last Saturday.

Following 376 minutes without scoring, Port turned the tables, netting five by half time at Stansty Park.

Joe Chaplin helped himself to a hattrick, bringing his tally for the season up to 25 goals.

Already doomed Queen’s Park, to their credit, stemmed the flow of goals in the second period and that despite being down to 10 players, when Kyle Hazelden was sent off after 55 minutes.

Port dominated from the start and Julian Williams was denied a goal in just the second minute by an excellent reaction save by home keeper Richard Cowderoy.

The home stopper also did well to keep out a free kick by Sion Edwards.

However, after 16 minutes the keeper came out for an Edwards corner, failed to gather, and Chaplin was in at the back post to score.

The home goal was leading a charmed life but the second goal arrived when provider Edwards took a free kick on the edge of the box on the right.

Despite the narrow angle, the trusty left foot beat everyone including Cowderoy.

With half-time approaching, Port upped the tempo and found the net three times in the space of five minutes.

First Tomos Emlyn broke down the right and Chaplin headed his excellent cross wide of the keeper.

Cai Jones was next on the scoresheet, capitalising when the ball broke loose to him on the edge of the box and he made it 4-0 with a well-struck low shot.

There was time for one more before the interval when Chaplin robbed James Etherington 25 yards out and broke into the box to fire home from 16 yards.

Queen’s began the second half encouragingly, but after 10 minutes Hazelden received a straight red from referee Ashley Jones for a wild tackle on Julian Williams.

Port continued to create chances though the edge was off their play by now.

Ifan Emlyn crossed well from the left but Cowderoy kept out Chaplin’s header.

The sixth goal came after 70 minutes. A good ball from Iddon Price sent Jake Jones racing down the right and he found Cai Jones in the box but the shot was blocked only as far as Sion Bradley, whose angled strike from 15 yards com- pleted the scoring. Port can now look forward to their last two fixtures against Flintshire opposition. First up at the Tra- eth will be Flint Town United on the May Bank holiday Monday, then Holywell Town will follow on Saturday, May 12.
