Harbourmen take revenge and head to semis

-

REVENGE was sweet as Holyhead Town advanced to the semi-finals of the Meditel Gwynedd Cup with a 6-3 beating of fellow league high-flyers Bontnewydd at Millbank last Saturday.

Last November, things had been quite different when Bont came to Holyhead for a first round Safeflue Shield tussle and triumphed 6-0. This time the roles were reversed. The Harbourmen started quickly, but Bont’s keeper was initially in superb form.

However, the home attacks kept on coming and Town took the lead through the prolific Asa Thomas.

Both sides battled hard to score the next goal, but it came Holyhead’s way when captain Tom Roberts darted in front of a defender to apply the finish and make it 2-0 at half time.

The second half started very similarly to the first, with Craig Brodie’s side on full throttle and they were rewarded with goal number three, courtesy of Roberts.

If Town thought the job was done, Bont soon made them think again as Aled Steele struck to reduce the arrears.

Town’s three-goal lead was soon restored from the penalty spot by Thomas. Holyhead were now on top and, from an excellent Jordie Murphy corner, Roberts grabbed his third of the day and Town’s fifth,

Steele and Simon Kay responded with goals for Bont, but Thomas made it 6-3 to complete yet another hat-trick, putting him on 38 goals for the season. ● Nefyn United’s hopes of landing the first silverware of the season in the Gwynedd League were shattered when they lost 2-1 in extra time to Gwalchmai in the Safeflue Shield Final at Y Traeth, Porthmadog, last Friday.

Craig Evans fired the Anglesey side ahead close to the hour before Mark Dunn forced an added half-hour with a 90th minute equaliser. And it was big-game specialist Corey Sinnott who grabbed the 113th-minute winner with a vintage goal. RICHARD BIRCH
