Super second half fightback is rewarded

-

CAERNARFON Rugby Club produced a tremendous comeback after the break to beat Llandudno 24-20 at Y Morfa in Division One North.

Although the Cofis made the stronger start, Tudno struck the first points via a penalty from scrum-half Byron Davies.

On the half-hour the visitors extended their lead following a driving lineout move that saw flanker Allan Davies shielded until he crossed the whitewash, making it 8-0 at the halfway stage.

Llandudno consolidated their period of supremacy when good inter-passing on the blind side saw prop Lewis Jones crash over after four minutes of the restart.

Caernarfon, with nothing to lose, began to throw the ball around freely and the adventurous approach was rewarded with a try from full-back Dom Yau, who added the conversion.

With 55 minutes played, Yau struck again, cantering in from 20 metres and coolly tacked on the extras.

Before Tudno could regroup the Cofis had maintained pressure with a chip through from Carwyn Roberts seeing Dylan Gwyn outsprint the defence to score out wide.

The six-point advantage soon became 11 when some excellent passing freed captain Iolo Hughes, who chipped ahead and won the chase to score the bonus point try.

Llandudno fought to the end and gained a deserved bonus point when Byron Davies wriggled over from close range and then converted his own effort as the final play.

Caernarfon finished their league campaign ninth in Division One North, their status in the top-flight secure for another season.

The Cofis still have one big date left – the North Wales Plate Final against Llandudno at Nant Conwy on May 13 (ko 2.30pm).
