This Trophy is for young people aged 17-25.

Siwan, 18, is from Y Ffôr and is currently in her first year at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor’s Pwllheli campus studying for her A levels.

Siwan explained that her winning piece of writing had to be in the style of the Welsh ‘ymson’ and on the subject of a person leaving home. ‘Ymson’ can be translated as a monologue or soliloquy. Siwan explained that an ‘ymson’ essentially consists of a collection of thoughts pouring out of the speaker.

Aptly, Siwan’s subject-matter was an old lady suffering from dementia who was having to leave her marital home and move into an old people’s home because of her illness. This lady was terribly confused and was missing her husband, who had in fact died several years before. Due to the dementia, the old lady was unaware now of her husband’s death.

Siwan explained: “The fact that my main character was suffering from dementia proved quite apt for the ‘ymson’/soliloquy format that I had to write the piece in. As with many dementia sufferers, her thought process jumped from one subject to another all the time, and from one year to another – going back in time to before her husband had died. Thoughts just poured out of this lady and in no particular order because of her dementia.”

Siwan added: “I have always loved writing to the extent that when I was small I even preferred writing to playing – writing was like playing to me. Having said this, I was shocked to win the Tlws yr Ifanc against such stiff competition.

Siwan hopes to go on to study at the St David’s Performing Arts School in Cardiff, where she hopes to start a degree in Performing Arts.
