Port looking to clip the wings of high-flyers

- Football: Huws Gray Alliance

COULD Porthmadog be the club that finally puts a dent in Airbus UK Broughton’s 100% record this Saturday?

Port are one of five clubs on 10 points and are presently in sixth spot.

The Traeth men will no doubt have been boosted by last weekend’s 3-0 home win over Buckley Town, which booked them a Huws Gray Cup quarter-final berth.

Port started in lively fashion, going ahead after just nine minutes.

The ball was bobbling about midway inside the Buckley half, with the visitors appealing for free kick, and in stepped Ifan Emlyn, bursting from midfield through the heart of the visitors’ defence to finish clinically from 12 yards.

In the 14th minute, a ball from midfield allowed Joe Chaplin to break behind the defence before running on to score with the coolest of finishes.

Before the interval, Chaplin cut in from the left and forced keeper Joey Makaruk to pull off a good save at full stretch before Gruff Williams tested the stopper at his near post.

Port began the second period strongly, with Chaplin again showing the strength and pace to worry any defence.

He burst away down the left before cutting inside into the penalty area and let fly with a shot which lifted over the bar.

Just before the hour mark Port scored the all-important third goal.

This was a great team effort, with several players involved in the build up before a great angled ball freed Jay Gibbs on the right of the box.

A quick look up and an inch-perfect pass found Iwan Lewis, bursting into the box, to finish from close range.

Keiron Moore missed two opportunities to get Bucks on the scoreboard, but otherwise their threat was limited.

Following two defeats, it was good for Port to get a decisive victory and a place in the last eight at home to Conwy Borough.

Porthmadog are a team always capable of upsetting opponents at the top end of the table and they will need all their abilities this Saturday if they are to ground the Wingmakers at Y Traeth, kick-off 2.30pm.
