Slice to have known you – it’s time for goodbye

-

AGWYNEDD bakery started by three brothers 52 years ago closed on Saturday as the last brother retired.

Selwyn Morris and brothers Alwyn and Dafydd set up Morris Bros in Cwmy-Glo, near Caernarfon back in 1966.

Since then, the family business has supplied its own shops in the village, Llanberis and Caernarfon as well as dozens of homes and stores across Anglesey and Gwynedd.

It has used the same bread recipe over the five decades and continues to have a loyal customer base.

But on Saturday, Selwyn – the last brother left in the business – baked and delivered his final loaves as he retired, aged g 74.

The bakery and the shops closed at the end of the day – with daughter Wendy also leaving after more than 35 years in the business.

Selwyn’s daughter Julie said: “He has been here for 52 years, getting up at 1am and not finishing till mid-afternoon, seven days a week, it is now time to retire.

“Over those years my dad and the rest of the family have worked hard in all weathers to get our bread to our customers, sometimes carrying loaves across fields in the snow to reach people.

“The recipe has stayed the same from the start and we don’t think there is anyone making craft bread like this around here, our mince pies are also famous.

“Dad is looking forward to retiring after so many years but he will also miss it,, he is so well known locally in all the sshops.

“There have been a few tears oover the week and people have been stocking up bread to put in the freezer!”

She added: “It is the end of an era and we didn’t really want to sell the business because this has aalways been a family business.

“We want to thank all our custtomers who have supported us over the years, we are very gratefful for their support.”
