Port­meirion Shops to reopen site in 2019

PORT­MEIRION Shops has bought his­toric Porth­madog de­part­ment store Ker­foots with plans to reopen the site next year.

Liq­uida­tors were called into the busi­ness in Au­gust and the shop ceased to trade af­ter more than 140 years.

The site went up for auc­tion this week and was bought for £325,000.

Now it has been re­vealed Port­meirion are the new own­ers and they plan to reopen the site as a shop and a cafe.

Robin Lly­we­lyn, man­ag­ing direc­tor at Port­meirion, said: “The Di­rec­tors of Port­meirion Shops Ltd to­day con­firmed that the com­pany had bought Ker­foots, Stryd Fawr, Porth­madog. The shop will be opened in spring 2019 as a ground floor re­tail unit and first floor cafe.

“This devel­op­ment will not af­fect Siop Port­meirion, 51 Stryd Fawr, Porth­madog or Caffi Port­meirion, Stryd Fawr, Porth­madog.

“New job op­por­tu­ni­ties will be cre­ated as a re­sult of this devel­op­ment.”

The Ker­foots build­ing – which was not owned by the busi­ness – was put up for auc­tion at the AJ Bell Sta­dium in Manch­ester yes­ter­day with a guide price of £300,000.

Pugh and Com­pany said the High Street site was sold for £325,000.

The store had been at the heart of the High Street since 1874.

Its clo­sure shocked the town and saw 22 staff made re­dun­dant. The Daily Post re­vealed the busi­ness owed more than £450,000.

A sign in the store said the busi­ness had been hit by a de­cline in foot­fall, “ex­treme” over­heads, and on­line com­pe­ti­tion.

Cllr Nia Wyn Jef­freys, who rep­re­sents Porth­madog (East) on Gwynedd coun­cil, said: “This is ex­cel­lent news for Porth­madog.

“Port­meirion is a lo­cal com­pany that knows the area well and al­ready em­ploys many lo­cal peo­ple.

“It’s also a com­pany that pro­motes the Welsh cul­ture and our lan­guage. “This will be a boost for the town. “I urge every­one to put their money where their hearts are and shop lo­cally this Christ­mas – money spent in Porth­madog stays in Porth­madog so please sup­port your lo­cal butch­ers, toy shop, book shop this Christ­mas.”
