Cool Cavanagh keeps Port on the right track

- Huws Gray Alliance

PORTHMADOG stretched their unbeaten run to nine matches in all competitions with a 1-0 victory at Gresford Athletic last weekend.

The result kept Craig Papirnyk’s side third in the Huws Gray Alliance, with a home test against Holywell Town to come this Saturday.

Shaun Cavanagh sealed the points at Clappers Lane with an 87th minute penalty – his sixth goal in five matches.

Port started the game promisingly, Jay Gibbs crashing a long range strike against the foot of the post. The match then developed into a midfield battle, with chances few and far between.

With half time looming, however, both teams had an opportunity to break the deadlock. For Gresford, Nathan Williams crossed from the left but Jack Chaloner turned a clear opening wide of the post.

At the other end, Gibbs’ corner was only cleared as far as Iddon Price, on the edge of the box, but the defender’s shot went over the bar. There was a late burst from Sion Edwards but he steered his shot wide.

The second half started in more lively fashion with the home team beginning strongly and setting up some neat passing moves. Five minutes in, they broke dangerously down the left and it needed a goal-line clearance from Gruff John to keep out a Josh Griffiths effort.

Things improved for Port after the introduction of Cavanagh and Julian Williams, back after several weeks out injured.

The duo’s movement up front made life more difficult for the home defence. Cavanagh had an early chance but keeper Ben Jones cut out his goalward flick.

Iwan Lewis, who had been prominent driving from midfield, then lifted an angled shot over the bar.

Port still had their worrying moments, Gresford threatening in dangerous positions on more than one occasion.

As both teams looked for a late winner, Cavanagh had his shot deflected for a corner.

There was plenty of huffing and puffing but it looked for all the world that both teams would have to settle for a point.

A late Port attack, however, and, under pressure, the home defence conceded a penalty which Cavanagh coolly converted.

Game over and another vital three points for the Traeth men.
