Porthmadog stay second despite dropped points

-

PORTHMADOG will begin 2019 second in the Huws Gray Alliance, reports Gareth Williams.

With neither Flint Town United or Bangor City below them winning last weekend, Port went unpunished for dropping two points in a thrilling 3-3 draw at revitalised Prestatyn Town.

This Saturday will see Craig Papirnyk’s side determined to return to winning ways when they welcome Penrhyncoch to Y Traeth.

Last weekend’s six-goal stormer at Prestatyn was a great game for the neutral, a nail-biter for supporters but a recipe for a nervous breakdown for both managers. Port travelled with their small squad seriously depleted.

The game could hardly have had a more dramatic start with Sion Parry racing on to Dan Dascalu’s pass to fire past the advancing Ryan Woods. The home side drew level after 25 minutes through Ben Maher.

A second half rollercoaster included a totally crazy four-minute spell with three goals.

Before this, Math Roberts scored his first for the club with a smart finish to put Port 2-1 up.

Dave Hayes’ fantastic 73rd minute free kick from 20 yards levelled the scores again, three minutes on and Maher converted a penalty. Sixty seconds later, Edwards’ superb angled shot hit the corner of the net.

Both teams pressed for a winner but neither could produce it. ● PORT suffered Boxing Day disappointment after Bangor City left Y Traeth 2-0 victors.

Having won 2-1 at Nantporth early in the campaign, Craig Papirnyk’s side had their sights set on a notable double, but it was not to be. An early first goal and a late second were enough to give Bangor all three points in this top four HGA contest.
