Christmas tree festival raises funds in memory of Eddie
FOR many the care of their local hospice gives peace of mind and the respite to carry on.
Earlier this year, Lorraine Gorst and her family, from Conwy experienced just that and how valuable the care of St David’s Hospice is.
Eddie, Lorraine’s husband of 25 years, had previously had the all clear from cancer in the January this year, but in May was told it had returned and was an aggressive form.
He was admitted to the Inpatient Unit at St David’s Hospice, Llandudno, where he sadly passed away three weeks later.
Lorraine, owner of Daisy Chain Floral Design on the High Street, Conwy, said “I have always been a supporter of St David’s Hospice.
“It is such a wonderful place.
“When we found out that Eddie would need care, St David’s was the first and only place that came to mind.
“The care is so personalised, and all the staff were wonderful. Unlike a hospital setting, we were able to make Eddie’s room his own.
“He was able to have his family, friends and daughter’s pet dog Megan visit whenever they wished and he was surrounded by his own belongings including the photo frames of those he loved.
“We even had a little party in his room for the royal wedding (Megan and Harry).
“The staff were so supportive, always there for us all – complete angels.”
To raise funds Lorraine and her family organised the first Conwy Christmas Tree Festival which was held in St Mary’s Church.
The week-long celebration took place from the 1st to 8th December and filled the church with trees beautifully decorated from top to toe.
They were of all shapes and sizes decorated by local businesses and community groups with ornaments such as traditional baubles and angels, to poppies, toy trucks and snowflakes made from wooden spoons.
Lorraine continued: “I would like to thank everyone involved. The community of Conwy have been so supportive.
“It’s a first and everyone really enjoyed it. We also had coffee mornings and a raffle on the Saturdays.
“People have been more than generous, some giving donations even if they didn’t take part”
Thanks to the generosity of everyone involved, the event raised £2,350.82 in memory of Eddie.
St David’s Hospice is a local charity providing hospice care to adult patients across Conwy, Gwynedd and Anglesey.
