Past winners Penallta pose threat to Pwll in Plate clash

- Rugby Union

PWLLHELI can expect a tough assignment when they host past winners Penallta in the fourth round of the WRU Plate at Parc Bodegroes this Saturday (2pm kick-off).

The Llŷn side maintained their perfect record in Division One North last weekend when a 24-3 home beating of Bethesda made it 10 straight victories.

Pwll are just two points behind leaders Llandudno with a game in hand.

Bethesda started the stronger but were pinned back by a series of handling errors.

Pwllheli broke away on 23 minutes and captain Tom Parry was put clear to score by the posts.

Pesda were offered two kickable penalty attempts, fly-half Gerwyn Thomas slotting the second on 38 minutes to make it 5-3 at half time.

The second half saw Pwllheli start well.

With their scrum now having a distinct edge they took advantage on their nudge after eight minutes, resulting in a try converted by hooker Alan Roberts.

Bethesda were nowhere near done and attacked Pwllheli at every opportunity. Only desperate defence kept them at bay.

Then 21 minutes into the half Pwllheli broke from deep.

A long kick from defence was fumbled by the Bethesda defender and the ball went loose.

Pesda were not quick enough to recover and centre Ianto Parri hacked on and won the race for the touchdown wide out.

The visitors rallied, but Pwllheli again made best use of dropped ball and their riposte came on the right.

Three quick passes and centre Deio Brunelli was able to score under the sticks to secure his team’s try bonus point. Osian P Jones added the two points.

Pwllheli’s seconds consolidated third place in Division Three North with a solid 39-0 win at Benllech.

Pwllheli Youths outscored hosts COBRA by two tries to one but drew 10-10.

The Youths are away at Dolgellau on Saturday.
